Marching to Zion

Shavuot 2010, Beth Elohim NY

The spirit of Hashem is moving throughout the Israelite community. We can see the love and unity expressed at every service and event. This year the spirit of Shavuot was so high that at Beth Elohim we took our Torah scrolls and not only march around the sanctuary as we normally do, but we were inspired to celebrate the “Season of the Giving of Torah” by marching out of our synagogue  and around the entire city block.

We had a police escort to control traffic when necessary. Local residents, pedestrians, passengers in cars and buses paused to take note of our holy procession.  We felt proud and exultant as we sang the praises of the Most High. In a sense we knew how the Children of Israel felt moving through the wilderness with the Ark of the Covenant. “…this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people… And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?” Deut 4:6-8
