I know that my services can be long and my sermons
boring, but at the end of one service last Fall,
Mother Anna, a retired Haitian member of Beth Elohim, shook my hand and said
with a smile, "Rabbi, Hashem willing I am
going to donate a new set of comfortable chairs to the synagogue." I
agreed whole heartedly: "If the chairs had more cushion, the people would
have more patience." Her Rosh Hashanah prayer became our Hanukkah
blessing. At this time of Skekalim let us all
"Repair the breaches of Lord's House."
