A New Year
For Us
May it be blessed and sweet

Beth Elohim Hebrew Congregation, Rosh Hashanah
Service at Rainy Park, Queens, NY 2005/5766
In Leviticus
23 God says “these are My appointed festivals” and commands us
to observe Holy Days such as Yom Zikron (Day of Remembrance),
Yom Teruah (Day of Horns). The ancient horns, Shofar, are an
alarm that warns of the approaching day of judgment and signals
the beginning of a ten day period of introspection that
culminates in Yom Hakiporim (Day of Atonement). According to
rabbinic teaching, this time of mercy coincides with the
anniversary of the creation of the world itself and the
forgiveness obtained grants us a New Year.
For generations black Jews, like many Jews around
the world, have gathered at rivers to perform their Tashlich
(casting off) service.

And this shall
be a statute for ever unto you: that in the seventh month, on the
tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work
at all, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that
sojourneth among you:. . . .And this shall be an everlasting statute
unto you, to make an atonement for the children of Israel for all
their sins once a year.” Lev

Hurricane
Relief Efforts Gain Support Among Israelites
During
the emergency Israelite Leadership Conference on Sunday, September
18, we were informed that there are many people in our community who
have relatives in the flood affected areas of Louisiana and
Mississippi. We immediately formed an ad hoc committee to help
victims of Hurricane Katrina, in addition to other individuals
affected by disastrous situations. Therefore, be it announced that
under the leadership of the Israelite Board of Rabbis, the Israelite
Relief Coalition has been formed and is prepared to collect
aid—particularly in the form of clothing and non-perishable food. We
invite you to select a representative from your congregation to be a
liaison to our Committee.
Since
Sukkot is a time for Israel's harvest, we must remember that there
are those who are in need of food, shelter, monetary donations,
clothing, and toiletry items. Therefore, in the act of chesed, allow
us to share our harvest with those in need by collecting from your
congregation this Sukkot.

Message From The Editor
Ten years
ago when we created our first web site; it was little more
than a simple beacon on the internet signaling that we are here and
we are not alone. Since that time we have striven to make the
quality of our interaction more meaningful on every level. It
is our goal to be a bridge and a network--particularly to those who
are searching for a supportive environment that affirms rather
than challenges our identity.
We hope that this
site will foster a sense of belonging and eventually feel like a
community to those who visit it frequently and contribute to it
richness and diversity. Rather than hiding behind the anonymity of
the internet, we promote familiarity. You will come to know us
through our names, pictures, places of worship, ideas, and our "kesid"
loving kindness. To those who are thirty for knowledge, we will
provide a steady stream of information on a variety of subjects as
well as access to teachers and scholars.
The various chat
rooms and listserves attempt to cater to the specific interests of
our visitors: youth can talk to each other, singles can meet,
students can learn, and political issues can be respectfully
debated. Each thing in its proper time and place. Private areas are
available and are restricted to the members who create them such as
the Israelite Board of Rabbis, the Academy, and congregations or
organizations that wish to communicate privately with their members.
All of them will have public links that describe if and how new
people can join.
There is far more
here than you can absorb in one visit; so, please add us to your
favorites list and sign our guest book so that we can stay in touch.
